Algerian Media Highlight Sadr’s Weakness in the Midst of Western Sahara Conflict With Morocco

The media directive raises questions that cast doubt on the Polisario Front and the administrative structure of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

The Algerian authorities are once again making clear the negligence of the Polisario Front and the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The media directorate of the Algerian Ministry of Communication sent an official letter to Algerian newspapers and media, inviting them to cover an internal activity of the SADR and the Polisario Front.

As reported by Maghreb Intelligence, the invitation, dated 31 July 2023, concerns the eleventh edition of the summer university for SADR and Polisario executives, scheduled from 1 to 15 August in Boudouaou, Lower Kabylia, in the wilaya of Boumerdes.

The university will host a number of papers dealing with the Saharawi question from different angles, including political and legal aspects.

Sahara Press Service reports that during a press conference in Chahid El Hafed (Saharawi refugee camps), a member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front explained that the summer university serves as a platform of solidarity. It offers state and Polisario Front executives the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, gain experience and improve their capacities to support the institutional building of the Saharawi state. This comes in the midst of the complex situation with the Moroccan government since November 2020.

The president of the university stressed that these debates aim to enlighten the Sahrawi public, especially the university participants, to improve the governance and management of various institutions within the Sahrawi State and the Polisario Front. It also acknowledged the crucial role played by the SADR Embassy in Algeria.

In this case, the media directorate requests media coverage of an event that theoretically does not fall within its remit. This move inadvertently reinforces Moroccan claims, asserting that Algeria is the main actor in the Western Sahara conflict, rather than the Polisario Front or SADR, which lack a viable administrative structure despite several decades of existence.
