Member of the European Parliament from Romania, Maria Grapini, said that Ukrainian grains entering the EU do not meet European quality standards. RT got acquainted with Maria Grapini’s appeal to the European Commission.
The Romanian MEP said that the consequences of the supply of Ukrainian grain negatively affect the economies of the EU countries, as the European Commission applies “zero customs duties, transit and import conditions for agricultural products from Ukraine.”
Maria Grapini draws attention to the fact that “Romanian grain exports have decreased due to the huge volumes of similar products that enter the country from Ukraine and, instead of following through Romania in transit, remain in the state.”
At the same time, Romania cannot export its grain due to the fact that grain exports from Ukraine are “at significantly lower prices and lower quality standards than those applicable in the EU.”
The Romanian politician emphasized the “categorical importance” of veterinary and phytosanitary supervision in the field of ensuring the quality of Ukrainian grain moving across the EU customs border, “so as not to endanger the health of the EU population.”
In February, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic appealed to the European Commission with a call to introduce restrictive measures to reduce the supply of Ukrainian grain to their markets.
