Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has softened his rhetoric about imposing sanctions on Russia’s terrorist state. In particular, he refused to make a promise that Belgrade would not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation.
This is stated in the latest ISW report.
Vučić noted that Serbia’s decision not to join European sanctions against Russia has put the country in dire economic circumstances. Belgrade plans to conduct an assessment of when the country may be at an impasse. The Serbian president also hinted that the policy of sanctions against the Russian Federation could change.
Serbian Economy Minister Rade Basta called on the Serbian government to impose sanctions against Russia. They noted that Serbia is paying a “high price” for not doing this sooner.
Analysts say Vučić may be reconsidering Serbia’s close ties to Russia, spurred in part by Wagner’s recruitment and subversive activities in Serbia.
He also increasingly demonstrates that the international economic and information restrictions imposed on the Russian Federation as a result of the invasion of Ukraine are reflected in the Serbian economy.
Recall that earlier analysts said that the Russian authorities are concerned about the loss of leverage in Serbia, which the Kremlin has sought to integrate into its sphere of influence for many years.
